When I spoke to John Robertson, president of Linux Gold Corp. about the new property announced on October 18th near Fairbanks, Alaska, he looked like a very happy person indeed.
“I can’t say much about it. The owners have extremely high expectations and the preliminary geology looks very interesting, but there’s no (N.I.) 43-101 compliant data available just yet. Our consulting geologist (and Qualified Person under NI 43-101*) took multiple samples from existing channels, and those assays will be out in a couple of weeks. That will be the first information we have that is 43-101 compliant.”
So why Alaska and why now?
For starters, Alaska’s gold resources in all categories (measured, indicated and inferred) have increased from a little more than 1 million ounces in 1985 to over 108 million ounces at the end of 2004. Of this total, over 60 million ounces have been put on the books since the price of gold was under serious pressure back in 1997. Over the last ten years, Alaska has added gold to its “ounce bank” at an average rate of 8.6 million ounces per year at a discovery cost of $3.36 per ounce.
The Pogo gold mine is currently in production, while an additional four gold projects, Donlin Creek, Rock Creek, Gil and Nixon Fork, are in permitting or advanced development stages. They will be adding value to Alaska’s mineral production over the next 5 years.
The reason for the excitement at Linux Gold is apparent. Ester Lode is in the middle of the Fairbanks Gold District, one of the more prolific gold areas in North America. Over 10 million ounces of gold have been recovered from placer mining alone since 1902.
All one needs to do is examine the impressive progress of Freegold Ventures Ltd.’s – Golden Summit property to get a sense of the incredible potential. Golden Summit is within the heart of the district, with over 6.75 million of the placer-mined ounces directly attributable to the streams that drain the Golden Summit project area. Golden Summit contains over 80 known gold occurrences, and is host to the largest and highest-grade historic lode gold producers in the district, with over 500,000 ounces of gold having been produced from underground mines from 1902 to 1942 at average grades in excess of 1 oz/ton.
Historic average grades of the two largest underground mines on Golden Summit were 1.3 oz/ton at the Cleary Hill Mine (281,000 oz total production) and 1.6 oz/ton at the Hi Yu Mine (110,000 oz of total production). Many mines were forced to shut down at the beginning of WW2 and never reopened, while others that attempted to reopen after the war simply could not handle mining once the water table was hit, or once bad ground was encountered (neither of which is a serious impediment to today’s modern mining methods).
Immediately following receipt of the assay results from the sampling program taken mid October, Linux will waste little time in drilling select targets to determine the nature and grade of the Ester Creek deposit. Wise investors will look carefully at this stock, prior to drilling. A high-grade intersection of 1 ounce per ton should garner serious attention from investors and fund managers.
For decades prospectors have been looking for the source of the gold that has been feeding nearby creeks and river systems where placer miners have recovered 10M ounces to date. The owner of the property believes the Ester property is connected to that source.
A significant advantage of the Ester situation (compared to the Kinross Fort Knox mine a few miles away, for example) is the low cost required to build a mill to economically crush high-grade underground ore – $20 million approximately. The Kinross low grade/bulk tonnage open pit cost roughly $750 million – approximately 350 ounces of production per day or $175,000 at today’s gold price. With Linux Gold Corp. (LNXGF) trading under $1.00, there is quite an opportunity.

Diversified Journey Resources Seeks Near Term Production

When the ancient Roman scholar Publilius Syrus said, “No pleasure endures unseasoned by variety,” he could well have been referring to mining companies. One trick ponies, as recent events are sure to prove again, live and die the by price of a single commodity, and as such, are more vulnerable to sudden or unexpected market movements than are polymetallic companies.
Just a year ago, you could have been in copper, precious metals, zinc, uranium or nickel, and you would have represented a safe exploration investment – all were quite bullish and each looked solid for the near future. Now base metals are under pressure with the threat of sluggish US economic growth, the price of uranium has taken a reality check, and gold, well, gold is better than ever.
Journey Resources (TSX.V: JNY) is one of those juniors that has an insurance policy against such unpredictability: The company is diversified in both commodity and locale.
At the top of Journey’s project list is a JV operation with Grenville Gold (TSX.V: GVG) known as the Silveria Mine, a past producer located in Peru.
I spoke with Journey’s President and CEO, Jack Bal, who described the project with superlatives, “Silveria, I believe, is one of the biggest silver deposits in Peru,” he said. “It’s the closest to production. It’s permitted. And we have a stockpile of ore. We’ve also secured a mill, which should be ready by October of 2008.”
To Bal, being near term on all his projects is a priority.
“We have three near term production stories, and we believe that to be successful in this market you have to go into production quickly. If you do too much exploration when the market’s not doing well, you’re going to dilute yourself in the long run.”
The Silveria JV deal stipulates that Journey can earn a 50% interest by spending no less than $6 million before December 1, 2008.
“All the money will go into the ground and take the project within the next 12 to 15 months into production at 500 tonnes per day,” Bal said. “We think it should generate significant cash flow – which we’ll get half of. We also have the opportunity to earn up to 75% by spending another 6 million on the project if Grenville Gold decides not to match funding with us.”
The joint venture indicates that Silveria will enjoy an injection of new cash, an increased pace of exploration, and a hastened move to production. A drill program is slated to begin by mid-February to see what mineralization remains within, around and under the old mine workings at the four existing past producing mines on the 10,000 acre property.
According to reports, past production from just two of the four mines totals some 50 million ounces of silver, plus lead, zinc and copper. There are an additional 2 million tonnes of tailings containing silver, lead, zinc and gold, which the partners are presently assessing for economic viability.
Next on the road to production for Journey is Vianey, a 50% owned, rehabilitated silver-lead-zinc mine located 250 km south of Mexico City in the state of Geurrero. The Vianey property is comprised of two blocks totalling 12,400 acres. Less than 2 kilometres away is the town of Atzcala, with water, telephone and medical facilities. The mine is already tied into the local power grid.
“We’ve spent the last two years rehabilitating the underground workings,” Bal explained. “It’s a relatively small mine and will most likely operate at 300 to 400 tonnes per day, but even with prices the way they are today, that will generate quite a bit of cash flow – for instance the rock at current metal prices is worth in excess of $300 per tonne rock, and at 300 tonnes per day, so if you add that up the numbers look good.”
Journey will begin an underground drilling program at Vianey this spring, with the goal of confirming high grade historical intercepts and expanding recent drilling.
A review of past calculations of potentially mineable tonnages of mineralization, including the most recent exploration activities completed in 1997 provides a total in all categories of 345,020 metric tonnes grading 2.13% lead, 3.66% zinc and 269 grams of silver per tonne.
“This is a high-grade deposit,” Bal said. “Between 8 and 10 ounces per tonne silver and also high in lead and zinc, so the grade is very good for the price of metals today. The previous owners couldn’t manage with prices at 1997 levels, so we picked it up for pennies. But at that time we’re talking about $5 silver and lead and zinc had collapsed – you know 30 to 40 cents per pound. They’re all three or four times that now.”
In terms of importance, Silveria and Vianey are first up to bat for Journey. But the company also has another inferred 313,822 ounces of gold in the ground on its 1,500 acre Musgrove Creek project in the Cobalt Mining District of Idaho. The Musgrove deposit has been intersected over a strike length of 400 metres, a width of 110 metres and to a depth of 150 metres. A 2006 NI 43-101-compliant report stated an Inferred Mineral Resource estimate of 8 million tonnes at 1.22g/t Au (0.036 oz/t) at a gold cut-off of 0.8 g/t.
Journey has re-opened approximately 4,700 feet (1,433 metres) of drill road and will drill nine holes for a total of 7,500 feet (2,286 metres). The drilling will test the main portion of the Ostrander Creek “gold-in-soil” anomaly delineated in 2004.
For this project, the company has also purchased it’s own drill, which effectively frees the company to do as much drilling as it wants for a fraction of the price.
Unlike the other two projects, Musgrove Creek is a bulk-tonnage, open pit candidate. Its grades and stripping ratio are – according to Jack Bal – very similar to the nearby Beartrack Mine, which Meridian Gold operated from 1996 to 2001.
“They reported average costs between $190 and $200 US per ounce of gold. They mined 650,000 ounces of gold. It was the first mine they put into production and it made Meridian Gold the company that it is. We’ve got similiar grades and stripping ratio,” Bal enthused.
Journey Resources offers investors several projects of merit, each with a light at the end of its tunnel. The company is diversified in multiple bullish commodities and its projects are located in countries that are politically stable and favorable to exploration. Also on the upside is an undiluted share structure, with 28,312,187 issued and outstanding and enough warrants to provide further cash without excessive dilution (5 million). In addition, many astute junior resource sector investors look for investments trading on the low side of their 12-month high/low. Journey is presently establishing a price floor of $0.26 per share, with a high/low of $0.45 and $0.22.

What’S Driving Gold?

Much attention has been given to the rise in the price of gold in recent weeks, leading investors to wonder, what are the current factors driving gold? The easy answer to that question is –fear. We have already witnessed an eight year bull run in gold, but many believe that it’s bull run is far from over. What is gold’s role in the credit crisis? Is buying the metal a better investment than investing in gold mining companies? Is it too late to cash in on the growth?
Before we can answer these questions, let us first review what role a gold investment might play in your portfolio. Investors buy gold for a number of reasons, including:
To hedge against inflation. To hedge against a declining dollar. As a safe haven in times of geopolitical and financial market instability. As a store of value. As a portfolio diversifier.
Falling under the precious metals asset class, gold is a monetary metal whose price is determined by various factors. Among these factors are: inflation, fluctuations in the dollar and U.S. stocks, currency-related crises, interest rate volatility, global geopolitical tensions and increases or decreases in the prices of other commodities.
In the credit crunch of deflation, gold and currencies are hoarded and the purchasing power of both rises. But, gold also thrives in inflationary environments. That is because of gold’s unique property with a dual role as both money and a commodity. Think of gold as money, and money is hoarded in deflation so gold naturally tends to go up. The point here is
that gold does well during extreme economic environments. Let’s dissect some of the benefits of owning gold in the paragraphs that follow.
Inflation
As inflation goes up, the price of gold goes up. Since the end of World War II, the five years in which U.S. Inflation was at its highest were 1946, 1974, 1975, 1979, and 1980. During those five years, the average real return on stocks, as measured by the Dow, was -12.33%; the average real return on gold was 130.4%. The environment in the 1970′s was not unlike the
environment today. The common denominators in both periods are huge budget deficits, loose monetary policy, soaring oil prices (2008) and the open-ended costs of war (Vietnam vs. Iraq/Afghanistan).
Store of Value
According to the World Gold Council, gold has maintained its value in terms of real purchasing power in the very long run in the US, Britain, France, Germany and Japan. Despite price fluctuations gold has consistently reverted to its historic purchasing power parity with other commodities and intermediate products. Gold is tangible, it’s a physical asset that
brings a sense of comfort when intangible assets, like stocks, are evaporating. But, while they do maintain a store of value, it is worth noting that gold, like stocks and other investments, is also subject to price fluctuations.
Safe Haven
Many investors are diversifying away from traditional equities and into gold because of the continued uncertainty surrounding the financial markets. Gold has long been considered a safe haven, or “crisis commodity”. Of course, as investors flock to safety investors the price of gold is pushed even higher. Historically, as people begin to distrust their paper assets (ie. Currency), this positively influences the price of gold too, as we’ll discuss in the next paragraph.
Currency Hedge
Not all citizens have full faith in their local currency, at times, this might even include the U.S. Dollar. So, what do they do? They buy hard assets like gold (a tangible and physical item or object of worth). Although it’s no secret that U.S. Dollar is world’s reserve currency and the main medium for global trade, the U.S. Dollar, like the Euro, Yen or other global currency,
is really nothing more than paper, or fiat money. Fiat money is money that is intrinsically useless and is used only as a medium of exchange. There is no physical asset that backs the U.S. Dollar today (or other global currencies for that matter) since its gold backing was stripped in 1971. But since gold is purchased using your local currency, in this case the dollar, then any decline in the value of the dollar causes the price of gold to rise.
Diversification
While all the other rationales for owning gold are viable, perhaps the most important reason to consider gold in your portfolio is for its diversification benefits. Gold, like many other commodities, typically has an inverse relationship to the market. Assets with perfect negative correlation to other assets in a portfolio help investors hedge away their risks, in effect
they reduce volatility while enhancing performance. Gold and other tangible assets have historically had a very low correlation to stocks and bonds. Because the price of gold increases in response to events that erode the value of traditional paper investments like stocks and bonds, it’s worth considering a fair allocation to this asset as part of a
diversified plan. The “right” allocation will depend upon your specific circumstances and risk tolerance, but a good gauge might be between 3% to 8%.
Owning Gold
The gold market is highly liquid and there are many ways that investors can own gold. The most traditional way of owning gold is via gold bullion like gold bars and coins. When buying the physical asset, many people buy gold coins, considering the potentially higher storage costs or risks associated with owning gold bars. Gold coins can be easily purchased directly from the U.S. Mint or from authorized dealers and precious metals firms. Depending on where you purchase the coins and the current demand levels, you may have to pay a premium (above the current spot price of gold) to acquire the coins.
Another way to access gold is through futures contracts or products like gold ETF’s (ie. Ticker: GLD) which offer investors a relatively cost efficient and secure way to access the gold market. A Gold ETF is an exchange traded fund with gold being the principle and only commodity being traded. Gold ETFs are listed and traded on the stock exchange and investors get units for their holding in the gold ETF. The returns on gold ETFs are more or less same as that of the spot price of physical gold. It’s worth noting that the IRS treats gold as a collectible for long-term capital gains tax purposes, therefore, gains recognized by individuals from the sale of gold ETF’s are subject to a capital gains rate of 28% if held for more than a year.
Finally, investors can also consider having gold exposure through gold mining stocks and funds. Some argue that this is more tax and cost effective, in that, there are no storage fees, theft concerns and gold mining stocks also benefit from lower capital gains rates. On the flip side, owning stocks in a mining company is really not the same as owning the actual gold.
In closing, gold’s recent rise is really no surprise given the recent financial uncertainty in the global markets. As fear and investor trepidation permeate the markets, investors look to physical assets to help them preserve their wealth. Times of crisis help fuel the demand for gold and, arguably, the easy access allotted by gold funds or ETF’s has further pushed up
gold’s price in recent years. To a certain extent, the demand for gold, mostly by investment funds, is feeding on itself.
While some analysts suggest that the price of gold is being inflated by a flood of new investment money (implying it might be overvalued), others predict even further price growth down the road. Either way, the argument can be made that gold offers sufficient benefits (inflation protection, currency hedge, portfolio diversifier) to warrant at least some representation in your collection of assets.

Gold has been called the most beautiful of all chemical elements. Its beauty has made it desirable for use in jewelry, coins, and artwork for thousands of years. It was one of the first pure metals to be used by humans. Gold is one of the few elements that can affect politics and economics. Wars have been fought over access to gold. Cities and towns have sprung up and died out as gold was discovered and then mined out. Many nations still count their wealth according to the amount of gold they keep in storage.
Gold lies in the middle of the periodic table. It is a heavy metal in a class known as the transition metals. Gold is also known as a precious metal (as are platinum and silver). Large amounts of gold are still used in the manufacture of coins, medals, jewelry, and art. Gold also has a number of uses in industry, medicine, and other applications. For example, one radioactive isotope of gold is commonly used to treat cancer. The chemical symbol for gold, Au comes from the Latin word for gold, aurum which means “shining dawn.”
Gold objects dating to 2600 B.C. have been found. They were discovered in the royal tombs of the ancient civilization of Ur. These objects showed that humans had already learned how to work with gold this early in history. Some of the gold, for example, had been formed into wires. One of the special skills developed by the Egyptians was the adding of gold to glass objects. They found a way to use gold to make glass a beautiful ruby-red color. The glass became known as gold ruby glass.
Gold is also mentioned in a number of places in the Bible. A passage in Exodus, for example, refers to the clothing worn by Aaron: “And they did beat the gold into thin plates, and cut it into wires, to work it in the blue, and in the purple, and in the scarlet, and in the fine linen, with cunning work.” Writings from every stage of human history tell of the discovery and use of gold. Roman historian Pliny the Elder (A.D. 23-79), for example, describes gold-mining locations. The Romans found it lying in stream beds in the Tagus River in Spain, the Po River in Italy, the Hebrus River in Thracia (now Greece), the Pactolus River in Asia Minor (now Turkey), and the Ganges River in India.
One of the most famous items using gold is the Olympic gold medal. Athletes from around the world dream of coming in first place at the Olympics. That means they can step up to the winner’s podium and wear their gold medal proudly. But the gold medal isn’t solid gold. It’s actually made out of silver. A thin layer of gold covers the silver. The last time a solid gold medal was used in the Olympics was 1912. Christopher Columbus found gold nuggets lying in the bottom of rivers and harbors in Haiti. Gold has long been known in the New World, too. During a visit to Haiti, Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) found gold nuggets lying on the bottom of rivers and harbors. A Portuguese explorer in 1586, Lopez Vaz, wrote that the region called Veragua (now Panama) was the “richest Land of Gold [in] all the rest of the Indies.” In the United States, of course, the most famous story about gold occurred in the late 1840s. Thousands of people flocked to California in search of gold. This era was called the Gold Rush. People became very rich or found nothing at all during this exciting time in history.
Gold is both ductile and malleable. Ductile means it can be drawn into thin wires. Malleable means capable of being hammered into thin sheets. A piece of gold weighing only 20 grams (slightly less than an ounce) can be hammered into a sheet that will cover more than 6 square meters (68 square feet). The sheet will be only 0.00025 centimeters (one ten-thousandth of an inch) thick. Gold foil of this thickness is often used to make the lettering on window signs. Gold is quite soft. It can usually be scratched by a penny. Its melting point is 1,064.76°C (1,948.57°F) and its boiling point is about 2,700°C (4,900°F). Its density is 19.3 grams per cubic centimeter. Two other important properties are its reflectivity and lack of electrical resistance. Both heat and light reflect off gold very well. But an electric current passes through gold very easily.
Generally speaking, gold is not very reactive. It does not combine with oxygen or dissolve in most acids. It does not react with halogens, such as chlorine or bromine, very easily. These chemical properties also account for some important uses of gold. Gold coins, for example, do not corrode (rust) or tarnish very easily. Neither does jewelry nor artwork made of gold.
Gold occurs in nature in both its native state and in compounds. The native state of an element is its free state. It is not combined with any other element. The most common compounds of gold are the tellurides. A telluride is a compound of the element tellurium and one or more other elements. For example, the mineral calavarite is mostly gold telluride (AuTe2). At one time, gold was found in chunks or nuggets large enough to see. People mined gold by picking it out of streams and rivers. In fact, gold was once very common in some parts of the world. People valued it not because it was rare, but because it was so beautiful.
The abundance of gold in the Earth’s crust is estimated to be about 0.005 parts per million. That makes it one of the ten rarest elements in the Earth’s crust. Gold is thought to be much more common in the oceans. Some people believe as much as 70 million tons of gold are dissolved in seawater. They also think there may be another 10 billion tons on the bottom of the oceans. So far, however, no one has found a way to mine this gold. About a quarter of the world’s gold comes from South Africa. Other leading producers of the metal are the United States, Australia, Canada, China, and Russia. In the United States, about two-thirds of its gold is mined in Nevada. California, Montana, Alaska, and South Dakota also produce gold.
The most famous story about gold in the United States might be the Gold Rush of 1849. As early as the sixteenth century, records contained stories about a great El Dorado (“the gilded one,” in Spanish; gilded means “covered in gold”) on the western coast of the United States. Tales of this magical city were repeated for centuries.
In the late 1840s, explorers began to travel from the Eastern seaboard to California in search of El Dorado. The flow of visitors was slow at first. Gold was first discovered in 1848 at a place called Sutter’s Mill. Sutter’s Mill was located near the present town of Coloma, California. Word of the discovery spread quickly. Within a year, thousands of men and women made the long, expensive, and tiring trip. Most people traveled across the United States in covered wagons or on horseback. Many of them had to cross mountains, plains, and deserts. Because of the difficult conditions, many people and animals got sick or died. Some people traveled around Cape Horn at the bottom of South America or across the Isthmus of Panama. No matter which route was used, the journey usually took months.
As people arrived in California, hundreds of mining camps sprang up. Some of them had colorful names. Poker Flat, Hangtown, Red Dog, Hell’s Delight, and Whiskey Bar were just a few! Mining for gold was hard work. Gold miners usually wound up being wildly successful or terrible failures. The Gold Rush of 1849 completely changed the state of California. It also helped expand the United States. At one time, gold was found in chunks or nuggets large enough to see. There is only one naturally occurring isotope of gold, gold-197. About two dozen radioactive isotopes of gold are known also. One radioactive isotope of gold is widely used in medicine, gold-198. This isotope has two major uses. First, it can be used to study the liver. It is made into a form known as colloidal gold. Colloidal gold consists of very fine particles of gold mixed in a liquid solution. The colloidal gold is injected into the patient’s body, where it travels to the liver. There, it can be detected because of the radiation it gives off. The radiation can be used to tell if the liver is functioning normally or not.
In a 1986 study, experts estimated that 121,000 tons of gold had been mined throughout history. Colloidal gold is also used to treat medical problems. In some forms of cancer, the body develops large amounts of liquid in the space around the stomach and intestines (the peritoneum). One way to treat this collection of liquid is with colloidal gold. The colloidal gold is injected into the peritoneum. It is not able to Leave the peritoneum and go into the stomach and intestines. While in the peritoneum, the colloidal gold gives off radiation. The radiation kills cancer cells that cause the accumulation of fluid.
There are at least two main ways to remove gold from its ores. One is to mix an ore with mercury metal. Mercury combines with gold in the ore to form an amalgam. An amalgam is a mixture of two or more metals, one of which is mercury. The gold amalgam is then removed from the ore. It is heated to drive off the mercury. Pure gold remains.
Which weighs more: A pound of feathers or a pound of gold? Teachers sometimes try to fool students with this old question. The answer would seem to be easy: a pound is a pound. A pound of feathers and a pound of gold should weigh the same amount. But that is not quite true. In the English system, most substances are measured using the avoirdupois system. In the avoirdupois system, there are 16 ounces to the pound.
But gold is weighed differently. It uses the troy system. In the troy system, one pound contains only 12 ounces. So, a pound of feathers (avoirdupois system) weighs four ounces more than a pound of gold (troy system). The weight of other precious metals, like silver and platinum, are also measured using the troy system. Gold is also weighed in carats. A carat is defined as one fifth of a gram, or 200 milligrams.
Gold is seldom used in a pure form. The metal is too soft. It would bend or break if used pure. Instead, it is used in combination with other metals called alloys. An alloy is a mixture of two or more metals. The mixture has properties different from those of the individual metals. The amount of gold in an alloy is expressed in carats. Pure gold metal (mixed with no other metal) is said to be 24-carat gold. An alloy that contains 20 parts of gold and 4 parts of silver is 20-carat gold. The “20-carat” designation means the alloy contains 20 parts of gold and 4 parts of something else (silver, in this case).
Gold stored in a national bank can be 24-carat gold. It is never used for any practical purpose. But gold used for any real application is almost always less than 24 carats. It must include other metals that make it stronger and tougher. Gold ores can also be treated with potassium cyanide (KCN) or some other kind of cyanide. The gold combines with the cyanide to form a new compound, gold cyanate. The gold cyanate is then treated with an active metal, such as zinc. The active metal replaces gold in the compound, leaving pure gold.
In a 1986 study, experts estimated that 121,000 tons of gold had been mined throughout history. Of that amount, about 18,000 tons were used for industrial, research, health, and other “dissipative” uses. Dissipative means that the gold was gone once it was used. It was made into devices that were eventually thrown away. The gold could not or was not recovered from the devices. Of the remaining 103,000 tons of gold, about a third (35,000 tons) had been made into gold bars held by national banks. The gold bars are used as security for national money systems. In the United States, for example, the nation’s supply of gold is stored at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
Finally, the remaining 68,000 tons of gold are owned by private individuals. This gold exists in the form of jewelry, coins, or bullion. Gold bullion are bars or other large pieces of pure gold. Jewelry is the largest single use of gold. In 1996, about 3,290 tons of gold were made worldwide. Of that amount, nearly 85 percent was made into jewelry. The second largest use of gold (about 213 tons, or about 7 percent) was in industrial devices and consumer products. Some examples include electrical contacts and switches, laboratory equipment, printed circuits, dental alloys, instruments on space vehicles, and nozzles used in the production of synthetic fibers. Gold is not required to maintain good health in plants or animals. It can be injected into a plant or animal without causing harmful effects. Some medical and commercial uses are based on this property.
